Foreword

This is the second part of the trilogy Vägen, (The Path), and also the centre of the whole story. The first part was titled Gryning, (Dawn), and the third will be titled Sånger från djupet, (Songs from the Deep). The title of this second collection of memories is Sagornas Ö which can be roughly translated to The Island of Fairytales.

For three years I isolated myself from the human world, moved to a 17th century cabin far away and dived deep into the world of symbolism, memories and music. The sheltering forest and its inhabitants kept me company through the years and for those who know about David Henry Thoreau’s book Walden, it was a very similar experience. The writing of this story would never have taken this form without this solitude, far away from the struggling of the society created by men. And here the very foundation to my own musical language took shape.

Undisturbed I learned the language of my instruments and also to listen to the voice within. Line after line, the lyrics slowly took shape. My wanderings on deserted roads beneath the moon, the rattle of dried leaves in the wind, the slowly moving mist dancing in the first rays of the morning sun, all this led me to The Island of Fairytales - Sagornas Ö.

The songs are most of all poems put to music, so the words and its meanings are the most important. Even so, I tried to make the music independent so that you could at least guess the feeling of the words by just listening to the music. Symbolic as it seems, only a few days after finishing the cd, the beautiful forest was cut down without remorse by the greedy landowner, and once again I had to confront the harsh human world. The very last morning I took farewell of this special place and it showed me it’s magic one more time. In the early dawn, the birds of passage kept me company and inspired me to write the first song of Sånger från Djupet. A part of me never left this island of tales...

So, a few years later I decided to dive once again, deep into this world of mine and revisit the island of fairytales. I came back to see if my old memories where still there and to add the elements to the songs that were my initial idea from the very beginning. A lot of instruments were missing in the first version from 2000 and I always wanted to correct some minor details. It took yet another three years of solitude to complete this cd, recorded in a small house on the countryside in the part of Sweden called Småland. My memories from this time are all connected to the harsh winters and the cold winter storms that became a framework for the music. Compared to the original recording this one may sound more "to earth", but I leave that for the listener to decide. As this is a complete story, it should be experienced from the beginning to the end without disturbance. A good advice is to use a pair of high-quality headphones.
